Alfalfa (Medicago sativa) is a common plant from the pea family, and it’s one of the oldest and most cultivated crops in history. References to alfalfa date back to early Roman, Greek, and Chinese cultures. The crop is believed to have played an important role in these and other early civilizations.
Alfalfa is another historical remedy used to support healthy lactation. The leaves and sprouts of the alfalfa plant contain compounds similar to estrogens, the female sex hormones which govern female processes such as lactation.
Alfalfa contains many beneficial vitamins, minerals, amino acids and is rich in antioxidants. It is a primary source of food for dairy animals, so it is an important part of the production of milk, cheese, and other dairy products.
Regular consumption of alfalfa may reduce triglyceride and LDL (bad cholesterol) levels. It is traditionally used to manage low blood sugar levels by stimulating insulin secretion. The antioxidants found in alfalfa may even help reduce complications such as kidney problems. Several mothers use alfalfa postpartum during breastfeeding as the plant possesses galactagogue effects.
Alfalfa (Medicago sativa) leaves and sprouts contain saponins, estrogenic isoflavonoids (e.g., daidzein, genistein), vitamin K, and the amino acid L-canavanine.
Dill seeds and leaves most likely owe their galactagogue properties to their high nutrient content. This herb contains the essential nutrients of magnesium, iron, and calcium, all of which are essential to your wellbeing and that of your baby while helping digestion.
Many women have deficiencies in one or several of those nutrients. Such a deficiency could lead to a decrease in milk production. It is also a rich source of fiber, calcium, iron, zinc, copper and phosphorus. Popularly known as “suwa”, it helps in improving milk flow, treat colic and enhances fiber in the diet. Dill contains essential oil rich in carvone and limonene, in addition to phenolics, such as trans-anethole, and flavonoids.
Our pituitary gland releases a hormone prolactin which is the primary factor responsible for breast milk supply. Zinc plays a vital role in releasing this hormone. Lack of zinc can reduce the release of prolactin hampering the production of breast milk. Dill being enriched in zinc works wonders on mammary glands and helps in releasing prolactin hence producing more milk.
It is a great source of Vitamin A, K, C, riboflavin, and a wide range of minerals and antioxidants. Being rich in Vitamin C, it helps in absorbing iron very well.

Today, blessed thistle is most commonly used to increase the production of breastmilk in nursing mothers. It is an all-natural, herbal supplement that can help boost milk production and flow, as well as helps to avoid clogs in the breast.
Alternative practitioners will commonly prescribe blessed thistle as a galactagogue, which is something you take to stimulate lactation. It is believed to increase the hormones prolactin (which boosts the milk supply) and oxytocin (which enables to release of milk from the nipples). Blessed thistle is believed to fight off bacterial infections in the body, is an anti-inflammatory, and possibly even be an anti-carcinogen.
The father of medicine himself, the Greek physician Hippocrates, recommended fennel as a remedy for low milk supply in the early 400s BC. Fennel is a popular herbal remedy in cultures the world over.
Studies have shown that fennel effectively increases a woman’s levels of prolactin, the hormone that stimulates milk production.
Like fenugreek, fennel contains estrogen-like compounds that are thought to enhance milk supply. And indeed, a handful of small studies have tied fennel consumption to greater milk volume and fat content, as well as infant weight gain.
Fennel is another traditional remedy for increasing milk supply, while aiding with digestion problems and menstrual issues. They are also given to new mums to help prevent gas and colic in their baby.
Apart from being fibre-rich, it’s also loaded with otassium, folate, vitamin C, vitamin B-6, and phytonutrients.
Stimulates breast milk production. Increases milk volume within 2-3 days and promotes the rate of weight gain in newborn babies.

Today, fenugreek is promoted as a dietary supplement for diabetes, menstrual cramps, and other conditions and to stimulate milk production during breastfeeding.
Fenugreek is a legume and it has been used throughout the world and is known for its medicinal qualities such as antidiabetic, anticarcinogenic, hypocholesterolemic, antioxidant, and immunological activities.
